  Research Interests

These include Sub-Saharan African photography, South African photography, colonial photography, documentary photography, contemporary South African art and photo-based practise, feminist photography, popular culture and contemporary theory.




  Teaching: Workshops and outreach

Svea Josephy has strong interests in photography and arts education and held the portfolio of Education Officer (Art Gallery and Community Culture) at Southampton City Art Gallery before joining UCT. She has taught Photography, Discourse of Art and History of Art at the University of Stellenbosch, the University of Cape Town and Peninsula Technicon. She has co-ordinated various camera and pinhole photography workshops for children, adolescents, adults and teachers for the South African Centre for Photography at the University of Cape Town. These include camera workshops for eye Africa, workshops for children at the MTN Science Centre’s Canon Camera Obscura, and workshops in conjunction with the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) as part of the Year of Science and Technology (YEAST). Svea has also been involved with workshops for school children as part of the South African Centre for Photography’s (f non-stop) outreach programme. She was also involved in outreach programmes by the University of Stellenbosch in collaboration with NGOs, such as the Women on Farms Project workshops and children’s pinhole photography workshops. She has served on the Steering Committee, Education Committee and Month of Photography Committee for the South African Centre for Photography at the University of Cape Town.
