"My work encourages me to be not merely innovative and build on what exists but to be inventive and to be open to ‘uncalled-for newness’. I can only assume that what I share inspires others to open up. If not, it is at least a series of examples of mindful artistic experimentation, and proof that one needs neither deadlines nor a belief system to make and do things.” – Christian Nerf.

Wednesday, 5 March 2014 13h00-14h00 Commerce Lecture Theatre Hiddingh Campus, 37 Orange St, Gardens, Cape Town “My work encourages me to be not merely innovative and build on what exists but to be inventive and to be open to ‘uncalled-for newness’. I can only assume that what I share inspires others to open up. If not, it is at least a series of examples of mindful artistic experimentation, and proof that one needs neither deadlines nor a belief system to make and do things.” – Christian Nerf.

Nerf was born in Johannesburg during 1970, and he attended the National School of the Arts. For 15 years he primarily focussed on collaborative projects as a way to deepen his artistic practice and develop a hands-on learning process at a distance from various academic institutions.

Since relocating to Cape Town in 2005 he has worked with many indiviiduals who are affiliated with Michaelis in some capacity. These include Lebo Tlali, Barend de Wet, Bettina Malcommes, Ed Young, Douglas Gimberg, Dan Halter, Andrew Lamprecht, Katherine Bull, Francis Burger and the Ginsburg Brothers.

In 2011 he changed tact and started to work on solo projects – traveling with his Itinerant Studio, writing and having embraced the restrictions offered by drawing and ‘challenging its ability to be a lawless territory’.

The last time Nerf gave a lunchtime-lecture at Michaelis was on 15 March 2006. He currently works in a shared studio space in Maitland called Atlantic House.
