Annie E. Coombes is Professor of Material and Visual Culture in the School of History of Art, Film and Visual Media, Birkbeck, University of London and has held visiting Professorships at the University of Bayreuth in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Graduate Research in African Studies; Brown University, Department of Art History; Rochester University as Professor of Post-Colonial theory; at Northwestern University as Mary Jane Crowe Distinguished Visiting Professor of Art History and at the Australian National University as Senior Research Fellow. Prof. Coombes has also lectured widely in Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia and South Africa. From 1980-81 she taught English literature and language in government secondary schools in the (then) Democratic Republic of the Sudan.
